Marlen D. Whitley is currently the Partner-in-Charge of the Los Angeles office of Townsend & Lockett, LLC, an African American owned law firm based in Atlanta. Marlen’s practice focuses on securities law compliance, corporate finance, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and general contract law. Prior to joining Townsend and Lockett, LLC he was the Senior Attorney in the Office of the Corporate Secretary at United Services Automobile Association (“USAA”). Marlen previously served as Senior Corporate Counsel of Ghost Management Group, LLC, a pre-IPO technology infrastructure company based in Southern California.
Prior to joining the aforementioned corporate legal departments, Marlen was a Corporate & Securities partner in the in the Houston office of Reed Smith, LLP, an international law firm, where he also served as the firm’s hiring partner and the firm’s first Executive Director of Diversity Recruiting.
He has written a number of articles addressing diversity and inclusion in higher education and the legal profession in particular. He has served on numerous community boards as well as serving as a director of the Texas Lyceum and the Commission of 125 at the University of Texas at Austin.
He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in African & African American Studies and served as president of the student body. Marlen received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law.
Marlen is a proud husband to his wife Julia, an accomplished lawyer and partner at Hunton, Andrews Kurth. He is the proud father of three sons, Jackson, Jordan and Jamison, and two daughters Sloane and Simone.
